How to repair interlock

Assess the Damage: Identify the areas of the interlock that require repair. This could include cracked, chipped, or sunken pavers, as well as areas affected by weeds or moss growth.

  1. Gather Materials: You'll need replacement pavers, coarse sand, a shovel, a rubber mallet, a broom, and a plate compactor.

  2. Remove Damaged Pavers: Carefully lift and remove the damaged pavers using a shovel or a flat pry bar. Be cautious not to disturb surrounding pavers.

  3. Prepare the Area: Clear any debris, weeds, or moss from the area where the pavers were removed. Ensure the base underneath is stable and level.

  4. Add Sand: Spread a layer of coarse sand evenly over the prepared area. Use enough sand to create a bed for the new pavers, ensuring they sit level with the surrounding ones.

  5. Install Replacement Pavers: Carefully place the replacement pavers into the prepared area, fitting them snugly against the surrounding pavers. Use a rubber mallet to gently tap them into place until they are level with the existing surface.

  6. Compact the Area: Once all replacement pavers are in place, use a plate compactor to compact the entire area. This helps to settle the pavers into the sand bed and ensures a stable surface.

  7. Fill Joints: Fill the joints between the pavers with more coarse sand. Sweep the sand into the joints using a broom, ensuring they are completely filled.

  8. Compact Again: Compact the area once more to settle the sand into the joints and lock the pavers in place.

  9. Clean Up: Sweep away any excess sand from the surface of the pavers.

  10. Seal (Optional): Consider applying a sealer to the repaired area to help protect the pavers and enhance their appearance. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for application.

By following these steps, you can effectively repair interlocking pavers and restore the beauty and functionality of your outdoor space. If the damage is extensive or you're unsure about tackling the repairs yourself, consider consulting a professional landscaper or paving contractor for assistance.
